2008 Presidential Debate Question- Democrats

This youtube video shows the Official English question being posed in the 2008 democratic primary debate.  The only member on the stage that supported the initiative was Senator Gravel. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton both had interesting thoughts on the subject:

Obama: “Everybody is going to learn to speak English if they live in this country. The question is not whether future immigrants will learn English, the question is whether we can come up with a legal, sensible immigration policy. We should not be distracted by these kinds of questions.”

Hillary: “The problem is if it becomes official instead of recognized as national, which indeed it is, then in a place like New York City you can’t print ballots in any other language. You can’t even have translators come into the hospitals for emergencies. I voted to say that English was our national language, but not our official language because of the legal consequences.
